Physical Overview
The ASUS Zenfone 3 is the first Zenfone to come with an all new design which looks totally different from the previous generation Zenfones. It comes with a 2.5D Gorilla Glass coating on the front and the back, which makes the edges smooth and gives a confortable feel in hand. The screen to body ratio has been increased to 77% from 72% if compared to Zenfone 2. There are chrome trimmings around the sides of the device which add a bit of bling into the handset. The width measures only 7.69 mm which is a lot thinner than Zenfone 2 which had 10.2 mm thickness. This makes it slimmer and easier to slide in and out of pockets. Another addition is the protruding rear camera, which does not allow it to lay flat on the surface. But it looks good and can be ignores if you are not into minor details. The overall look and feel of the Zenfone 3 has been improved a lot and it feels more premium and handy this time. The front top has the 8 MP secondary camera, proximity & ambient light sensor and the speaker grill. Bottom has touch capacitive navigation keys.
On the top edge, you can find a 3.5mm audio jack and secondary microphone.
Power/Sleep keys and volume rocker is on the right hand side and they are made up of metal. They have a grainy finish for better feedback.
SIM card tray is placed on the left edge.
USB Type-C port, primary microphone and loudspeaker grills are at the bottom of the phone.
On the back side of the phone, you will find a good looking square shaped camera module with dual tone LED flash and laser autofocus. And the fingerprint sensor is placed right below the camera lens.
Display Overview
The Zenfone 3 sports a 5.5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) Full HD Super IPS+ display with up to 500cd/m2 brightness, 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Colour production and colours were looking good on this display; even the viewing angles were very flexible. Brightness was good indoors, but we’ll test it later with outdoor usage. Thin bezels add up to the beauty of this display as it looks even more appealing due to the low screen to body ratio.
Camera Overview
The Zenfone 3 comes with a 16 MP main camera with Sony IMX298 sensor, and an 8 MP front camera. As far as our initial verdict is concerned, we were quite satisfied with the pictures that we clicked indoors but we’ll have to wait for a complete camera test before we give a word. Details and colours looked rich and the laser autofocus worked great with OIS in terms of stability and clarity.
Price & Availability
Zenfone 3 is priced at 249 USD (3GB/32GB) will be available in Gold, Blue, Black, and White colour options. No word about the availability in India has been given by the company till now. We can expect it to land in India with a price tag falling between 12K-16K.
Conclusion
The ASUS Zenfone 3 is an ideal phone for those who care about looks and still need a power-packed phone that can handle multitasking, gaming and other demanding tasks and still cost under a pocket friendly price bracket. Other than looks and power, it has a good display and camera that will justify the price you will pay for it. We will reserve our final words until we play with the device for some more time.
