Moto G 3rd Gen Hands on Overview, First Impressions, Comparison

Physical Overview

The New Moto G follows same design ethos as most other Motorola devices. The speaker grill at top and bottom is still present, but the silver bars on top are gone for good. On the rear side, you will notice a silver plastic strip around the camera module which stretched all the way down to the Moto dimple.

The ribbed back cover looks great and is removable but battery is sealed inside. Another significant addition is water resistant build. Moto G 2015 is IPX7 certified, which means it can remain submerged in 1 m deep water for 30 minutes, without being damaged.  The new Moto G looks and feels best if you compare it to other Moto G models.

The display looks similar to the HD panel we saw on Moto G 2nd gen, in terms of brightness, viewing angles and overall quality, which is a good thing.

User Interface

The user interface is almost stock Android lollipop which is light and efficient. Moto goodies like Moto Assist, Moto Display, twist to launch camera app and Moto Migrate are all present too. In our time with the device, the software was very snappy. A very important benefit of the near stock Android is that you can expect functional update to Android M by the end of this year.

Camera Overview

Motorola is using the same 13 MP sensor as on Nexus 6 with a wide F2.0 aperture lens, dual LED flash and blue light filter. The shots we have taken so far are rich in details and show accurate colors even in low light. The front 5 MP selfie camera is also a pretty decent performer. You can click good HDR images from the rear camera and record 1080p videos.

Competition

Of course the smartphone market has evolved faster than Moto G series. You can find better specced phones like Lenovo K3 Note, Xiaomi Mi 4i, Asus Zenfone 2, etc, but good specs don’t always add up to good consumer experience. The beautiful IPX7 water resistant body, vibrant display, brand appeal and promise of updates that actually work are a few key strengths that make the new Moto G worth considering.

Price and Availability

Moto G 3rd Gen comes in two trims. Both 8 GB storage- 1GB RAM variant and the 16 GB Storage- 2GB RAM variants are available for purchase on Flipkart for 11,999 INR and 12,999 INR. If you are buying, go for the 2 GB RAM variant. Like always, availability is exclusive to Flipkart.
