Camera and Internal Storage

The main camera on the Utrafone 502 is an 8MP unit which you find sitting at the center of the rear of the device. Although we’ve gotten used to seeing 8MP cameras on low cost phones of late, it still accounts for some decent value for money when you keep in mind the price factor, after all the phone costs just 7,299 INR. The front-facing camera on the device is a 1.3MP unit which should suffice for one and all, since most hardly use the front facing camera in our country. Coming to the internal storage, the device comes with just 4GB of ROM which many of you might have already guessed. It is something we really don’t like (we hope to see 8GB or 16GB as the standard in the coming months) but again, India is a very price sensitive market and manufacturers have to take measures to keep costs down. Again, there is a microSD slot for further expansion up to 32GB.

Processor and Battery

The phone packs a dual core processor, clocked at 1GHz. We would bet our money on the MT6577, which is the most popular dual core processor running underneath the hoods of most dual core smartphones of today, of course from the budget segment. Gaming heads should stay away from the device and save up for something more powerful, since a dual core 1GHz processor simply isn’t potent enough to handle high-end gaming. Otherwise, the processor should do fine and people looking for a decently powered phone for utility and productivity will probably be satisfied with the performance. The phone comes with a 1700mAh battery which definitely is a downer. With a 4.5 inch screen, you expect at least 2000mAh of juice. The device might just fail you here, especially if you are one who is always looking to extract the most out of the phone’s battery. You cannot expect more than 8-10 hours of battery on the phone, given that you use the device like a smartphone.

Display and Features

The 4.5 inch panel on the phone comes with a rather good resolution of 960×540 pixels, also known as qHD. As far as I’m concerned, 4.5 inches is the best size for a smartphone – you can watch videos and movies while not having a hard time fitting the phone in your pocket and using it with one hand. With the qHD resolution, you are sure to have an enjoyable time using the device. Of course, the experience will not be like using a full HD device, but not very far from that. The dual SIM phone will come with Android v4.2 installed, which is something good.

Looks and Connectivity

Many budget phones look surprisingly good, and most come with a decent build quality as well. The Ultrafone 502 does an average job on the looks department, which of course is subjective. Connectivity features include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and aGPS.

Comparison

The phone finds itself in a list of phones which virtually is never ending – dual core, dual SIM, budget phones. Some devices which might bother the Ultrafone 502 in the market are: Micromax Canvas Fun A74, Spice Smart Flo Pace 3, etc.

Conclusion

We feel that the device is a good attempt by Zen to make a mark in the budget dual core segment. Zen phones are known for their build quality which many find to be better than competitors like Micromax and Karbonn, however, there are phones available in the market which cost lesser and come with more or less identical features. It is your call to go for better build or lower cost.
